Chapter 14
Slamming the door closed behind him, Jeremy sighed. Every muscle in his body ached from the stress of the day. No one should have to face such a horrible day. And the darn police department kept him until they got word back from the coroner stating they believed Esmerelda's death was an accident. No sign of foul play and not enough physical evidence to hold him.
Nevertheless, for some reason that stupid cop, Officer Wood was his name, didn't believe his innocence. He said there was no such thing as coincidences. There had to be a tie to Esmerelda's death and Jeremy being on the tramcar the following day when the body was found. He swore he'd get to the bottom of things. And would be keeping a close eye on him. Watching his every move.
"Stupid, flatfooted pig," Jeremy grumbled under his breath. "No such thing as a coincidence my butt. Idiot."
Pushing his fingertips to his temples, he tried to rub a raging headache away while walking towards the kitchen. He had a tendency to get headaches from stress. And today was nothing but stress.
Stepping into the eating area, he sauntered over to the fridge and yanked it open. Scanning the shelves, he couldn't make up his mind on what to eat and decided to settle on a bottle of beer for now. A beer should be good for a headache.
With a clink, the lid popped off the cold glass bottle and landed on the black Formica countertop. Taking a swig of the fizzy cold liquid, his stomach tightened up and growled, protesting.
The day had been so screwy he'd forgotten to eat. The only sustenance he recalled having was the coffee he picked up through the drive-thru this morning. And the majority of it went to his trousers, not his belly.
Again, his stomach rumbled in disapproval of the beer.
"All right, all right," he mumbled. "I'll feed you."
He reopened the refrigerator and stared at the food packed shelves. Nothing called to him. Nothing screamed out, eat me!
Wrinkling his nose in disgust, he was all of a sudden aware of the fridge's contents. Vegetables. There were always lots and lots of veggies packed in the fridge. Veggies of every color lurked about the shelves. Everything from asparagus to Brussels sprouts to carrots to radishes. There was never any real food in the fridge.
Esmerelda was always concerned about her weight and made sure what she ate, Jeremy ingested, also.
Junk food was a no no in the Sinclair house. No greasy food, no fast food, and definitely no sugary desserts.
A smile surfaced when Jeremy suddenly realized he could do whatever he wanted for dinner. Without Esmerelda breathing down his neck, he could do as he pleased. With that thought, his headache began to dissipate. Life wasn't so bad after all.
Picking up the phone on the corner of the kitchen counter, near the double French doors leading to the backyard, he dialed 4-1-1.
The call was patched through to an automated female voice asking, "City and state, please.
